Is Solar Worth It in Central Illinois? The Real Math

By Jose Montemayor4 min read

Is solar worth it? The honest answer is, it depends. I know that is not exciting, but it is the truth, and anyone who gives you a one-size number without seeing your home is guessing. Here is how to think about it for yourself.

The variables that actually drive the math

Whether solar pays off comes down to a handful of things that are specific to you:

  • Your electricity usage and your current rate. Higher usage usually means more potential savings.
  • Your roof. Orientation, shade, and condition all matter, and a roof that needs replacing soon changes the picture.
  • How you pay. Owning with cash or a loan versus a PPA leads to very different numbers.
  • Incentives. Illinois Shines can pay for the renewable energy credits your system produces, and the utility offers an upfront rebate per kilowatt installed.
  • The 2025 net billing change. Exported energy is now credited at the supply rate, not the full retail rate, so using your own power on-site is worth more.

One honest note for 2026. The 30 percent federal residential tax credit for buyers ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. That worsens the buy-side payback compared to a year ago, and a fair estimate has to reflect it. Confirm any tax question with a licensed professional.

When solar is probably not worth it

I would rather tell you the truth than make a sale. Solar is usually a poor fit if your roof is heavily shaded, if it needs replacement and you are not ready for that, if your electricity usage is very low, or if you plan to move soon and cannot recover the cost. There is no shame in any of those. Sometimes the right answer is to wait or to pass.

How to get a straight answer

The only way to know for sure is to put your actual numbers into the math, your usage, your roof, your rate, and today's rules. That is exactly what a free bill review is for. I will run it honestly for your home, and if the math does not work, I will tell you. No pressure, no obligation.
